The Dynamic Hitter

Hitting... one of the most complex and dynamic movements in all of sport.

Here's why:

Our body roughly has 640 muscle groups, all with complex kinematics when put into motion. Our brain and nervous system are at the center of controlling it all and initiating the "quality movement." With this knowledge, is it reasonable to think that, as a coach, you can simply pick out a body part that you "think" is malfunctioning and make it change within a swing? I would argue that without knowing the true cause of the symptoms and minimal understanding of the biomechanics and anatomy of a swinging body, it would be very difficult to diagnose the necessary change.

Coaches often times create more confusion or an unhealthy dependency for the athlete. Young athletes get over-coached at an early age and by the time they are teenagers, they are 10 year veterans of their commonly poor mechanics (as Jerry Weinstein would say) and lack of bat-speed.

The R3 hitting system works to provide a tool to embrace the chaotic nature of the swing and develop an athletes intuitive feel. We ask the athlete to learn the swings complexity and difficulty, but teach them how to prioritize common symptoms of failed swings and understand the true causes of their success.

Mentality. Training. Efficiency.

Mentality. The first priority of training high level hitters is to train approach. Every player regardless of physical skill has the ability to have the intent to drive the baseball with their best bat-speed as well as have an attitude that promotes intensity and toughness. This is Mentality. It is arguably the most valuable tool and toughest to train when developing athletes that keep pitchers frustrated and fearful day in and day out.

Training. Without developing the body, there is almost no purpose in attempting to teach mechanics to a hitter. We have to learn how to swing with bat-speed before we can learn to truly hit! We have to develop the athlete before we develop hitters. "Nice and easy" is for chip shots in golf, not baseball. There is no nice and easy at the major league level. Those guys challenge the defense with bat-speed on every swing. The R3 system maps out individual performance improvement programs consisting of strength and conditioning techniques to promote power production. All hitters need to have bat-speed regardless of their role on the team.

Efficiency. When combined with the right intent and a body that is learning to move better and faster, mechanics become easier to teach and easier to self-coach. Most mechanical flaws stem from poor stability or mobility at a certain joint and even from poor intent or focus. We diagnose the cause of mechanical flaws, not just the symptoms. One must understand that the swing is like a row of standing dominos. Each segment is no more important than the other and must fall into place for the best swing to occur as often as possible. A solid foundation and understanding of the four absolutes of the swing and the three "checks and balances" will empower the player to improve. Our drills are programmed to never allow the athlete to "plateau" in their development and teach the swing in a sequence rather than in broken pieces. We ensure that the athlete trains to ready their swing for game-speed, which unfortunately is not the norm in baseball today.

When the R3 3-facet approach is taught, the athlete understands how the three aspects of their development work to complement each other.
